More than anything, I'm simply curious. It's obvious Suigetsu-san did this for his own selfish reasons, but I can't tell whether all three were really motivated by something awful.

Yes. 'Tis not a power, exactly, but more of a tool. One that can pinpoint the most vital piece of evidence we have, or—in the instance of more than one case we must solve—tell us which one any given evidence is relevant to. I do believe it could aid us on what to focus on.
That seems quite useful indeed. I've since learned we were mistaken to think Mr. Roxis and Mr. Revali were tied together. . . perhaps your item would have helped us avoid that misfortune.
